Collector’s Photos of Ferraris – limited edition

A smart box holding a selection of important shots as for the most important competitions which Ferrari took place to with its Gran Turismo cars. Hereby the six available photos:

Mille Miglia 1948. Tazio Nuvolari and Andrea Scapinelli, Ferrari 166 Inter Sport

This photograph seems to capture a thrilling moment that, in fact, never came to pass: Tazio Nuvolari winning the 1948 Mille Miglia in a Ferrari. The Mantuan driver was 55 by then and his Ferrari little over a year old, but together they dominated the race to such an extent that they were half an hour ahead of the other Ferrari driver, Biondetti. But then, the little 166 (2000 cc V12), which by then had lost its bonnet and a mudguard, ground to a halt just before the finish-line when a pin in a rear leaf spring snapped. Biondetti’s Ferrari was first over the line in the end but there would never be another chance for a blistering victory that would have linked the names of the world’s greatest driver, whose career was nearing its end, and the world’s greatest constructor, whose star was in the ascendant.

Carrera Panamericana 1954. Umberto Maglioli, Ferrari 375 Plus

The gruelling Carrera Panamericana was a sports car race in stages on open roads. At the time it provided one of the few opportunities for American and European cars to compete directly with one another. Maglioli’s Ferrari 375 Plus, seen here in an uphill stretch of the tough Mexican roads, dominated the fifth and final edition of the race in 1954.

Mille Miglia 1956. Eugenio Castellotti, Ferrari 290 MM

Spectators lining the road, wet asphalt, a bale of straw protecting a wayside post. This 1,500-kilometre-plus race remains the most fascinating challenge in motor racing. And one that Castellotti would go on to make his own too.

Targa Florio 1961. Olivier Gendebien, Ferrari 246 SP

Ferrari’s second victory on the Madonie Circuit, a long stretch of tricky bends on a narrow, insidious road with just a single coastal straight that ran to Bonfornello. Teamed with Wolfgang Von Trips, the Belgian Gendebien won the race in the 246 P, nicknamed the Sharknose like its F1 counterpart. Musso and Gendebien had also won in a 250 Testa Rossa in 1958.

Tour de France Automobile 1964. Lucien Bianchi and Georges 'Jojo' Berger, Ferrari 250 GTO

Road racing, track sessions and hillclimbs were all combined to calculate the overall rankings for the Tour de France. Bianchi and Berger, seen here in the 250 GT0 in a hillclimb, would go on to win the 1964 edition.

Targa Florio 1965. Nino (Ninni) Vaccarella, Ferrari 275 P2

The Targa Florio drew hundreds of thousands of spectators to the Madonie Circuit and, having debuted in 1906, was one of the oldest road races in the world. Palermo-born Vaccarella knew the route like the back of his hand and was the Targa Florio’s greatest star. Teamed with Lorenzo Bandini, he won the race outright in 1965.
