The single-seater with which Alberto Ascari twice won the driver's world title was the second to feature the new in-line four-cylinder designed by Lampredi and debuted at the Modena circuit on September 23 1951. It is thanks to the 500 F2 that Ascari remains the only Italian driver to have reached the top step of the podium on two occasions, both at the wheel of a Ferrari.
